External Hard Drive for Beginners

All computers often have built in drive that acts as a storage system containing it's operating system, programs, and  files. But at some point, this drive needs to be freed up to attain the desired speed  and function of the system. For most computer users the built in hard drive is already enough space but for others who are into audio or video editing for either business or social networking, watching movies or just plain saving big files for whatever purpose would benefit a lot from investing on an external hard drive.

What is an External Hard Drive?

It is a portable hard disk drive that is connected to your computer. It's like a little black book, which saves and stores important data at a safe and secure location of your choice and easily retrievethe data at a later date by connecting it to a nearby pc. Are considered afforadble nowadays and is a terrific way to share files.

Top 5 uses for an External Hard Drive.

1.)Storage capacity

Aside from using CD's,DVD's or flash drives to save data. External Hard Drives  uses GB (short for gigabytes) of data in a convenient little package compared to the stacking storage of CD?s or DVD?s that are only capable of storing a small amount of MB (short for megabytes) of data. 1000 MB = 1 GB. One can buy an external hard drive capable of holding 500GB of data. A huge amount of difference from a CD that can?t store more than 1GB.

2.)Support data

Beginners and Experienced users alike both need to BACK UP data. All users will at some point experience the frustration of losing their saved data. From important documents such as family reunion pictures, dissertations to business related documents, to the simplest application such as games. To help avoid this frustration due to common viruses, accidents like coffee spillage, hardware damage due to a surge of electricity, etc. Having a an external hard drive acts a support for security copies.

3.)Music and Video Storage

Music and Video files consumes huge amounts of data on a hard drive. Especially when you?re a Music lover. Music can quickly take up space without you realizing it. Moving these to a external hard drive not only frees up huge amounts of space for you internal hard drive. It also can protect them from viruses as they are on a separate hard disk.

4.) File Sharing

From small to large amounts of data. From simple pictures to your favorite music jams. File sharing from one computer to another becomes much easier. Simply saving it onto a external hard drive and hand it to a friend. Easy, convenient and secure.

If your Internal Hard Drive becomes irreplaceably damaged, buying a External Hard Drive to replace it becomes cheaper. Or if you already have a External Hard Drive, a quick swap and your done. Assuming the systems are compatible of course.

As a beginner myself these five (5) are my top reasons I could use my External Hard Drives for. Hard Drives of 125GB capacity is more than enough for pictures and documents. But hey, if it?s not enough there is always a 1 TB (short for Terabyte) Hard Drive. 1000 GB = 1 TB.
If you didn't notice I said 'Hard Drives', plural, as in I have more than one external hard drive. Nobody said I could only have one for all purposes.
